Hercules, also known as Heracles, is the most famous Greco-Roman legendary heroes. Hercules was the strongest man on earth and the son of Zeus and Alcmene. He considered himself equal with the gods. Hercules was very brave and compassionate for many reasons as well. Heracles biggest accomplishment and story was the 12 labor task. Zeus wanted him to be the ruler of Greece, but his jealous wife Hera denied it. Therefore, Hercules had to suffer the persecution of Hera. Hercules first exploit was when he was a baby and two great snakes came to him trying to kill him, but Hercules killed the snakes by turning and twisting them.
When Hercules performed the 12 labors he went through extreme challenges that no one could even imagine. The 12 labors went in this order: (1) the slaying of the Nemean lion, whose skin he thereafter wore; (2) the slaying of the nine-headed Hydra of Lerna; (3) the capture of the elusive hind (or stag) of Arcadia; (4) the capture of the wild boar of Mt. Erymanthus; (5) the cleansing, in a single day, of the cattle stables of King Augeas of Elis; (6) the shooting of the monstrous man-eating birds of the Stymphalian marshes; (7) the capture of the mad bull that terrorized the island of Crete; (8) the capture of the man-eating mares of King Diomedes of the Bistones; (9) the taking of the girdle of Hippolyte, queen of the Amazons; (10) the seizing of the cattle of the three-bodied giant Geryon, who ruled the island Erytheia (meaning Red) in the far west; (11) the bringing back of the golden apples kept at the world’s end by the Hesperides; and (12) the fetching up from the lower world of the triple-headed dog Cerberus, guardian of its gates.
After the labors, Hercules had many other adventures. Hercules also successfully fought the river god Achelous for the hand of Deianeira. When he was taking her home, the Centaur Nessus tried to violate her, and Heracles shot him with one of his poisoned arrows. Heracles ended up falling in love with Iole, daughter of Eurytus, king of Oechalia. Hercules was also a part of “Jason and the Quest of the Golden Fleece.” He helped lead Jason past the Argonauts.
Hercules v Superman
Hercules is just like a superhero, he saves the day, rescues someone in need and gets the girl in the end Superman is just the same. Both of these characters have many similarities in their physical and mental characteristics. For example the obvious similarity of these two is their incredible strength, these guys seem to be able to lift anything and carry the most impossible loads of weight to where it is simply ridiculous. We must also look at Superman and Hercules at a more intimate level, both of these superheroes are incredibly brave, courageous and valiant. Though they may have their low points, in the end both of them are true heroes for what they have and continue to do. Mythology and today’s superheroes might be more similar to each other than we might think.
